7 Best RMR Footprint Pistol Red Dots (2024)

By Joe Kriz

01/18/2024

If you’re reading this, you’re likely considering your first or next red dot for an RMR footprint pistol.

First introduced with the launch of the Trijicon Ruggedized Miniature Reflex (RMR) optic in 2009, the RMR footprint has widely become the industry standard for full-size/compact, double stack, optic-ready handguns. Since then, it’s been adopted by nearly 20 other optic manufacturers – including Swampfox – and is used by 40 different pistol dot sights.

Though not the only footprint used by red dots, its tried and tested history makes it the go-to standard for dependable optic mounting across all firearm platforms. Below are the seven best RMR footprint pistol red dots currently on the market according to us and in no particular order.

Only optics capable of mounting directly to an RMR footprint without the use of an adapter plate were considered.

Best RMR Footprint Red Dots

Swampfox Justice II

Engineered to compete for match wins, the second-generation Swampfox Justice II is our largest red dot yet. Measuring 30mm corner to corner, its massive lens is recessed and reinforced for protection against the challenges of competition. Available with a 6 MOA red or green dot or new 4-in-1 red multi-reticle with 10 brightness settings and Shake N’ Wake auto on/off technology, Justice II is currently the largest window dot sight on the market with green illumination and a multi-reticle.

Trijicon RMR Type 2

It wouldn’t be a list of the best RMR footprint dots without the optic that established the mounting standard – the Trijicon RMR Type 2. Identical in dimensions to the original, the RMR Type 2 replaced the dual fiber optic-tritium illumination with an adjustable manual and automatic LED and eight brightness settings. The Type 2 can be had with a 1 MOA, 3.25 MOA, or 6.5 MOA red center dot for precision shooting, versatility, or close-quarters engagements.

Holosun HS507Comp

As its name suggests, the Holosun HS507COMP was also designed for competition use. The first to implement a new Competition Reticle System (CRS), the red and green illumination multi-reticle includes four components, including a precision 2 MOA dot and three open circles, measuring 8 MOA, 20 MOA circle, and 32 MOA circle. The 507Comp is constructed from 7075 aluminum with multilayer reflective glass, a side load battery tray, and Shake Awake technology.

Swampfox Liberty II

Little brother to the aforementioned Justice II, the Swampfox Liberty II features a larger, recessed 24mm window with red and green 3 MOA dot or new 4-in-1 multi-reticle. Ten illumination settings cater to any lighting condition while Shake N' Wake auto on/off ensures anytime optic readiness. Its 7075-T6 aluminum construction and universal RMR footprint make Liberty II a rugged optic adaptable as a primary or secondary optic on pistols, risers, and offsets.

Bushnell RXM-300

Designed in coordination with Open World Speed Shooting champion, KC Eusebio, the Bushnell RXM-300 boasts a large 28mm wide window for rapid target acquisition. An EXO Barrier hydrophobic coating sheds water and debris for a crisp, clear view of its 4 MOA red dot reticle, illuminated by 12 brightness settings for shooting in any light condition. Dual Speed Holes in the optic hood are intended to crumple to protect the optic lens from direct impacts.

Holosun HE508T X2

For those tough on their firearms or wanting extra durability, look to the Holosun HE508T. Housed inside a Grade 5 titanium body with more than double the tensile strength and 5x the fatigue strength of 7075 aluminum, the 508T is as rugged and reliable as they come. Offered in red and green illumination with a multi-reticle 2 MOA dot and 32 MOA circle, the optic features 10 brightness settings, Shake Awake technology, and Holosun’s Solar Failsafe battery backup.

Trijicon RCR

One of the few RMR footprint closed emitter red dots, the Trijicon RCR was designed with legendary ACOG durability in a compact package for pistols. Patented capstan screws allow the red dot to be mounted to the industry standard footprint while a top loaded CR2032 battery powers a 3.25 MOA red dot. Exceeding demands of military and law enforcement applications, the RCR can withstand direct impacts and survive in the harshest environments.

RMR Footprint Red Dots

Of course, these are only seven of nearly 40 pistol red dots on the market with the industry standard RMR footprint. And that doesn’t even include the many optics capable of mounting to an RMR slide cut with the use of an adapter plate.

It’s also worth noting that the RMR footprint is only one of many mounting standards used by pistol dot sights in the industry, which include the Noblex/Docter, C-More, RMSc, and others.
